The Independent film

Basically the independent film, also called “Indie film”, was a film which was produced outside of the American film studios, without any financial support . At the beginning only the American film producer were producing this kind of films, later also other countries were using this type of films.

In 1980 when the term “Independing films” arise, young film producers ,who get bored and were having brilliant creativity ideas ,were trying to produce their own little movies, first they had to find financial support for their films ,which stories are different from the typical film stories.

From their conception, independent films aren’t just made outside of the studio system. They are made in opposition to the studio system, with its relentless need to round off the corners and soften the blows.

What is independent film? Is it unrestrained, Pegasus out of personal film-making space? I think the answer is half .It's because independent film is not operating in a vacuum, it connect with many other institutional like economic, technological or political and also the Organizations, industry and ideologies may affect the film's theme and style.

The origin of independent film are after the second world war. Camera which are more portable and the decision of Paramount, extract a group of experimental and avant-garde film specifically shot artist's appear, films are exploiting and independent film starting become popular.

What are the benefits of independent film? The biggest advantage i can think about is they are inexpensive, you can produce a independent film with any mainstream film company's sponsor. Also independent film business isn't subject to the constraints of factors, and the subject can be very broad and rich. You can start from personal experience to the social, gender and religious concerns. So it gave us more space to show our creative and ideas without such a big expenditure.

Graphic Breakdown of Dear John- Zoe

This is a graphic breakdown of the opening of the film Dear John. I basically recorded what happens when during the first 2 minutes, noting down a range of things, from the titles to when sound is introduced.

Film Pitch To Mrs. Black- Katharina, Kim & Zoe

An Independent movie, revolving around the young female protagnosist, Sophie. She tries to come to terms with the death of her best friend, Stan. Waking up and getting ready for the day ahead, she reflects the times they had together. Sophie never speaks during this time, as her narrating voice explains the situation in which she has been placed, and the memories that she had shared with Stan as the scene switches from her to the flashbacks that she is having


This idea includes a young protagonist who's life has been turned upside down. offering a completely different view and insight on the life of a teenager. This unusual context in which the protagonist has been placed creates an original and fresh take, therefore ideally fitting into the genre of an independent movie.

Independent Film Research- Zoe

The term Idependent or Indie refers to a film that is mostly produced outside of a major film studio. In order for it to be considered as independent, less than half the films financing must come from a major studio, as the movie should not be dependent on large labels, hence the name of the genre.

The genre Indepent Film also refers to art films in which the producers’ personal artictic views are realized. Therefore the content might differ drastically from most mass marketed movies.

The roots of the genre started developing in the early 1900s, where the fimmakers began to resist the control of a trust called the Motion Picture Patents Company or “Edison Trust”.

During this time Thomas Edison owned most of the major patents relating to the motion pictures as well as that for raw film. The MPPC enforced it’s patents and constantly received injunctions against independent film makers. Due to these threats, independent filmmakers began building their own cameras and moving to Hollywood, California. This distance from the home of Edison in New Jersey made it more difficult for the MPPC to enforce authority on the independent filmmakers.

To fit into the genre of an independent movie, we will have to include an unusual protagonist, such as a young troubled teenager. The context in which the story is illustrated should be original, perhaps a narration with a series of flashbacks. Finally, we will need to come up with an interesting and original film plot, offering a different view and take on life and the situations in which people are placed.

Jelly Babies Task Thriller 2- Katharina, Kim & Zoe

Two friends begin to argue.

 One of them pushes the other down a hill, killing her.

 The one who died, comes back as a ghost.

 The ghost goes into her friends body.

And makes her body jump into the sea to take revenge.


Comments: 
We tried making a PG ghost films, but we found it a bit hard coming up with a convincing ghost story thats appropriate for kids. I think we had the right idea with the ghosts, but it isn't a total success on the PG rating.

Jelly Babies Task Thriller 1- Katharina, Kim & Zoe

 Twin Girls.

 Fancy the same boy.

 One twin sees the other kissing the boy they fancy.

 In rage she murders her twin.

And pretends to be her sister to be with the boy she fancies.




Comments:
This task was at first quite challenging, as coming up  with an original and convincing story line took a lot of thought. Yet once this was done everything fell into place quickly as we arranged the jelly babies to our liking and recorded the images to depict the story.
