Narrative Theory - Kim

Narrative theory (narratology), is a term created by Walter Fisher which is based on the concept that people are essentially storytellers. Storytelling is one of the oldest and most universal forms of communication and so individuals approach their social world in a narrative mode and make decisions and act within this narrative framework (Fisher 1984). But in our film, I don’t think it fit the theory, so I’ll just simply explain it.

Equilibrium: Everything is normal
Disruption: Something happened
Resolution: Realized that is wrong
Restored Order: Find the way to solve out
New Equilibrium: A new life after they solve out the problem.

Research On Institutions – Kim

I was looking for some productions companies are good for our film, and I found that Focus Features could be the productions for our film. It is the art house films division of NBC Universal's Universal Pictures, and it acts as both a producer and distributor for its own films and a distributor for foreign films. Also Art House is strongly fit to the independent film, I think that Focus Features should be the best production company for own movie, and it produced quite a lot movie, like; Brokeback Mountain, The American, Pride And Prejudice.

Research on institutions- Katharina

I was researching in the internet so find out which film institutions could be the right one or the best fitting film institutions.

The first institution that I was thinking of was “SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT”.
Summit Entertainment is famous for their Independent movies, they are specialised on Independent movies.
I was thinking of a movie that Summit Entertainment produced and I came up with the Twilight saga, which has an woman as an protagonist.

Perfect Audience - Kim

Our movie is an independent movie base on a girl's feeling.I think it will attract more girls than boys because i dont think boys will like this kind of film, they will mostly prefer more fighting shot or detactive action movie. On the other hand, i think this movie can attract teenage girl or couple very much, because the main story is about a girl's feeling and we keeps things simple; like their costume are very common to make audience feel that this story could happened to people around you and maybe attract people that they've been to this situation before as well.

Animatic of our Storyboard- Katharina, Kim & Zoe

This is an animatic of our storyboard. This is basically the last step before our actual movie is uploaded. It shows the audience what is happening when to the soundtrack. It also features the titles we wish to include.
We've done this a bit wrong, as we haven't included all the shots that will actually take place in the movie. Instead we've done an illustration of each scene, which hopefully allows the audience to have a good grasp of what will happen.
Also, please ignore the lack of snow, we drew these before the blizzard arrived at Gstoun.

Props and Costumes- Kahtarina, Kim & Zoe

Costumes: Anna in the 'flashback' scenes

  • A dark blue trench coat
  • Black Hunter wellies
  • Tights
  • Furry Hat
  • Grey Gloves

Costumes: Anna in the 'reality' scenes
  •  Blue checkered pajama pants
  • Wooly socks
  • White tank top
Costumes: Paul
  • Jeans
  • Leather jacket over a hoodie
  • Vans
We will not be needing a great deal of props in our movie, apart from the most obvious one, snow.
Otherwise, we'll include a watch for Anna to look at when she is getting out of bed and sheets which she can fold. There will also be a mirror in which she observes her face. The walls in the room we have chosen to shoot in is already decorated with loads of colourful and quirky photographs which adds a more personal essence to the scene.

Shooting Locations- Katharina, Kim & Zoe

Here are some shots of the locations in which we intend to shoot our movie:

This bedroom is where we will be taking the 'Reality' shots when Sophie is getting ready for the day ahead whilst reminiscing about a happy time with Stan. The cool photos and clutter is ideal as it adds authenticity and extra personality to the character. We've gotten permission to film in this room.
This lawn in front of Ghouse is where we will be filming one of Sophie's 'Flashback' scenes where Stan and her are walking around the field. The vast area of this location is ideal for the jump cuts we intend to include in our editing.
Silent walk is where we intend to film Sophie's 'Flashback' scene where they will be mucking around and carrying eachother. The path leading up to the Michael Kirk is ideal, as the trees will frame the scene which appeals to the eye.
The trees ahead in front of Ghouse are ideal for our final scene where Sophie and Stan will be having a snowball fight, as we think the winding around the trees will create a sort of cool effect and movement in the scene.

Our Actors- Katharina, Kim & Zoe

Anna Stoss & Paul Antauer

These here are out actors. We found them suitable for the roles of our movie, Anna playing Sophie and Paul playing Stan. They both negate the typical highschool jock and cheerleader stereotype, each possessing their own original style. Therefore we found them ideal for the two quirky teenage roles. We also think that since they are both media students they sort of understand what we are doing and how a movie brief works. Their already developed friendship can also make a more convincing act than two strangers as in the movie Sophie and Stan are incredibly close.

We'll also be using Dolphin Klaas' voice as the non-diegetic narration, as she has the perfect british accent and we found that her voice compliments Anna quite well.

Risk Assessment- Katharina, Kim & Zoe

Before we start shooting our film, we have to make sure that the conditions that we are going to be working in are safe. Despite the fact that none of these locations are particularly hazardous, we did find a couple of risks that we would like to avoid.

First of all, due to the snow, it's VERY cold outside. Therefore, we'll have to make sure that our actors and ourselves are dressed appropriately in order not to freeze. We'll also have to ensure that we'll be wearing suitable footwear in order not to slip, especially if our actors run around in the snow.

Although this is not a threat to our safetey, it will be vital for us to ensure that it won't be pouring down with rain or thundering whilst we are filming, as that would ruin the mood completely. However, this is just a minor precaution that we'll have to take.

Another thing similar to this, we'll have to ensure the consistency of our shots, as we would not want Anna's outfit, for example, to suddenly change between shots. Also, it is important that we do not break the 180 degree rule.

Other than this, we haven't found anything to risky and if we dress up properly and make sure that our actors are not performing any life threatening stunts we should be good to go.

Perfect Audience Member, Katharina

Perfect Audience member

I was thinking who might be more attraktive to watch our movie.
Our movie will be an independent movie with a girl as protagonist.
Boy are always want to watch films with a lot of action, guns and a lot of special effect.Girl are more likely to watch this romantic-movies and always this kind of movies.
Girls would more likely watch our movie rather than boys would because this movie is based on a girls life and it is getting a bit in the romantic side.
They would just get bored because there is not a lot action in it.
Our movie is basically telling the story about a girl that lost her love of her life.
I think that girls understand more what she is feeling than boys because they are girls and they are more sensible than boys.

Sound For Our Movie- Katharina, Kim & Zoe

Throughout the first two minutes of our movie we intend to have a non-diegetic narrating voice that is meant to be the thoughts of the protagonist. We would like to avoid diegetic sound apart from the occasional laughter in Sophie's flashbacks, and cut out dialogue entirely, as we really want the audience to feel as if they were in the main characters mind.

However, beneath the narration we would like to have a sort of quirky, dreamy tune reflecting her mood and allowing the audience even further into her thoughts.
Here is a possibility that we have found on the website http://freeplaymusic.com/ :

Storyboard- Katharina, Kim & Zoe

This is a photostrip that we have drawn to depict the scenes that will take place in our film brief. There's a small explanation of each shot on the drawing, justifying why we have chosen these scenes. Each of these switch between the 'reality' where Sophie is slowly getting out of bed and getting ready for the day ahead, and the 'Flashbacks' where she is reflecting on the days where she was happy with Stan inside her mind. On each 'Reality' shot we intend to have a title introducing the actors, directors etc and eventually the name of the move on the last shot. Although we have not drawn out every shot since we are not entirely sure of what exactly we would like just yet, we have drawn out every scene and included our intentions in the captions to leave our options open. However, we are very sure of the scenes we have described.

Narrative Theory- Zoe

Being an independent movie, our film brief does not necessarily fit into a narrative theory. We were very careful not to fall into the stereotypical romantic comedy or dramedy category, attempting to put our own quirky original twist on the movie.

However, in a way it does possess some elements of Todorov's narrative theory.
The 'disruption' being Sophie's drug addiction and dysfunctional relationship with Riley, the 'resolution' her realization that her life is quickly getting out of hand and the 'restored order' her moving back to England to finish school and restart fresh. However, the first and last 'equilibrium' would have to be altered as there was never a real equilibrium to start with as the story begins when a disaster takes place, the death of her friend, throwing her into a new and imposing situation. However, the ending does correspond to the idea of a new equilibrium as she has recognized her faults and left Riley to continue with her new life.

Our film brief, however, really can not be categorized into Propp's narrative theory as it is not the stereotypical movie involving a villain and a hero and a happy ending. The theory is very traditional, depicting more of a fairy tale type of movie, whilst our film is unconventional and does not involve an actual villain and hero. However, there is an apparent resolution and absentation when the protagonist leaves home to start on a whole new life to abandon her corrupted ways.

Story Arc- Katharina, Kim & Zoe

1. A newly graduated 18 year old girl, Sophie, has just suffered the loss of her lifelong best friend, Stan. Not only had they been friends since the first day of school, Sophie had been in love with him just as long. Never having a chance to confess her love, she is devastated by the loss of such an important figure.

2. Constantly fighting with her mother, her life disrupted by Stan's death, she flees to New York to live in her father's old apartment. Sophie's mother lets her go, exasperated with the arguments they had been having, glad to see her go. Her life in america is then presented to the audience, as she takes up a job as a dog walker and spends most of her time losing herself in the public libraries of New York and observing others around her. Her life is very lonely there at first.

3. One day, as she's wandering in a library, her favourite place in which to lose her thoughts, she meets the elusive Riley. Both unsure of where they stand in life, they form a disfuntional relationship. Together they take refuge in drugs, roller coasting up and down the railways of intoxication, losing their thoughts in the hallucinations that has now become their world.

4. Sophie's habits spiral out of control, and as hallucinations of her past haunt her she suddenly realizes that she is not able to recognize Stan, much less the person she used to be when she was with him. In an attempt to regain her life, she leaves Riley without a word, revisiting her past as she moves from the imposing city of New York to her mother's home showing up on her doorstep sobbing after a year without contact. In her attempt to get clean she travels a hard road battling the temptations of her previous addictions.

5. Several years pass, and it is apparent that she is now doing well, having moved back to America to attend an Art University in order to set up the gallery which she and Stan had always dreamed of. One day, Riley appears at the doors. He confesses his love for her and begs her to rejoin him. After agreeing to see him for a short while thinking it couldnt hurt, she spends one intoxicated night with him and realizes what her life would be if she got back with Riley. She leaves him, and the last shot of her is her walking home from the back in the busy streets of New York as she retrieves a photo of Stan from her wallet.

Throughout the movie she experiences flashbacks of her life with Stan, especially when she sees something that is in relation to the way he died, as his cause of death is never really revealed until the very end, allowing the audience to make their own assumption.

The Key Elements- Katharina, Kim & Zoe

Here are a list of elements we will have to include in our film opening in order to conform to the expectations of the indie genre, the audience we have chosen and what is expected of a film opening:

- An interesting and quirky series of titles introducing the actors, producers and name of the movie, perhaps in a cool font and colour.

- An unsual protagonist (young, female, quirky, in a strange situation)

- An unusual predicament (the loss of a close friend with whom she was in love with)

- Colour washes that reflect the mood in which the character is in, differentiating between the present and the past. This creates a certain mood and allows the audience to understand the feel of the story further.

- Cool, trendy clothing which depicts the characters as stylish and quirky, appealing to the audience choice.

- Alternative music. Perhaps something dreamy and a little unusual, allowing the audience to come closer to the feelings that the protagonist is experiencing.

- Interesting camera angles and editing to create a new aspect on the actors.

- An unsual introduction to the story (no use of diegetic dialogue, just non-diegetic narration meant to be the thoughts of the protagonist as she explains her situation.)

Research On Institutions- Zoe

Judging on the genre of our movie, I made some research to find the most appropriate production companies to produce, exhibit and distribute our film. Due to the fact that it is and independent movie, I decided to try and steer away from the more known and conventional companies such as DreamWorks Pictures, and attempted to find smaller institutions which focused more on the indie genre.

Fox Searchlight Pictures, established in 1994, is a division alongside the larger 20th Century Fox. Specializing in independent, british, dramedy, horror and foreign films and often very involved in the distribution of these movies. I found this company suitable as our film brief would fall under several of the categories mentioned being a british independent film involving the quirky elements of a dramedy. Both the movies Garden State and Little Miss Sunshine which strongly resemble our film with their tragic plot, young protagonists and quirky characters were produced by Fox Searchlight Pictures.

Another possible candidate for the productions of our movie would be Focus Features. It is the Art House division of Universal Pictures, acting as a distributor and producer for it's own films. Art House is strongly connected to the Indie Genre, therefore I found this company perfect for producing and distributing our film. Several movies that have been produced by this company are Lost In Translation, The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Taking Woodstock and Somewhere. All of these movies possess a sort of dreamy atmosphere where the protagonist is not sure of where they are in life and what our role is and I really would like to incorporate this mood into our movie.

A final possibility for the production of our movie would be Summit Entertainment, a company specializing in Independent Movies much like our own. It is mostly famous for the Twilight Saga. Although this movie could be considered very mainstream nowadays as Twilight is such a popular book, it possesses many elements we would love to explore in the opening of our film. Twilight portrays a young female protagonist that is not sure of what to expect when she is placed in a completely new environment. The insecurity that she feels strongly reflects the feelings of our protagonist as she will slowly have to learn how to live without her best friend.

Opening Analysis of Little Miss Sunshine- Zoe

The movie, Little Miss Sunshine, is quite similar to our film brief as it depicts a young female protagonist and falls under the same genre of Independent Movies.

In the opening of Little Miss Sunshine we are introduced to six characters, ranging in age and gender, whom we assume are a family. The audience gets a small taste of each role as they are introduced briefly and individually to the non-diegetic sound of an instrumental song that possesses somewhat of a tragic tune, the piano and violin working to create a sad mood.

The audience is first introduced to an extreme close up shot of a little girl, the screen focused on her wide innocent eyes framed by large, thick rimmed glasses. Later on, the diegtetic sound of a man announcing the winner and a reverse shot unveils that she is watching a beauty pageant. Her intent stare behind the thick rimmed glasses, suggests that she longs to be part of this world, and the innocence and naïvity that radiates from her face implies that she believes she can. The little girl soon comes into full view as a low angle shot records her pausing and rewinding the video of the pageant she is watching, implying that this is not the first time she has watched it and that this is something she is very focused. The young girl appears to be holding her chubby stomach in brightly coloured clothes that don't quite match, a complete opposite of the manicured, beautiful girls that she is watching. An establishing shot then gives the audience a clear view of the room in which she is standing, dull and mustard colour. The décor suggests that the movie may be set in the late 1960s, early 1970s in the home of a modest family due to the scarceness of the furniture and decoration. The little girl is then seen imitating the women on the television screen, waving and clasping her face in delight. The contrast between the awkward clothes, big glasses, chubby belly, stringy hair and the actions she is making whilst watching the clip imply that although she desperately desires to be in this world, she does not fit in. The instrumental non diegetic sound compliments the tragic essence that this scene transmits.

Following the little girl, we see a low angle close up shot of a middle aged man holding some sort of speech to an audience in front of a large projector. The diegetic sound of his voice is loud and encouraging as it booms through the room, suggesting that he has a lot of faith in his programme of turning losers into winners. The low angle and establishing shots make him look important, as the room is dark apart from him lit up by a large streak of artificial lights. The hand gestures and actions that he uses whilst addressing his audience implies that he confident, almost arrogant, about the product he is trying to sell. Once his speech is ended the audience is expecting a large crowd of whooping people. However, as the lights flicker on, it is soon discovered that it is taking place in a very empty classroom and only four people are hesitantly clapping. His cheap, shabby suit is also exposed suggesting that he is from a modest family and background. This adds a sense of irony to the speech as the once 'winner' of this scene is now discovered to be somewhat of a loser as he is holding his speech to an empty audience in a shabby suit, convincing them to buy a very unconvincing product.

The audience is next introduced to a teenage boy. He is working out prefusely in his room, the close up and jump cut shots allowing the audience to feel the effort that he is putting into his work out. The boy's room reflects the house that was previously seen when the little girl was introduced, mustard colour and scarce apart from a large poster depicting Friedrich Nietzsche, suggesting that they are perhaps siblings. The boy then proceeds to cross off a long list of days on a calender. The combination of the poster, the work out and the calender is a strong implication that he is working very hard towards something he desires, Nietzsche perhaps being his idol. He is dressed in very conservative clothes, reflective of any teenage boys, and he does not speak during the scene, suggesting that he is quite reserved and focused on achieving his goal. The determination he uses whilst working out depicts a very hard working boy, striving and counting down the days until he can achieve what he wants.

The scene then changes to an elderly man, locking himself into a bathroom similar to all the rooms that were previously viewed, implying that they may all live together. The man is dressed in quite eccentric clothing, suggesting that he is not a typical grandfather. The sudden change in non-deigetic music to quite mysterious and mischievious and the fact the he is locking himself into a bathroom depicts him as having a secret that he does not want the rest of the family knowing. These suspicions are confirmed when several close up shots follow to show him pulling out cocaine from his fanny pack and snorting it up. He then takes a seat and his face goes into a daze as the drugs kick in. The combination of the locked bathroom, eccentric clothing and cocaine in this scene depicts someone who feels quite out of place in life, and needs an escape for himself without the rest of the world knowing.

Next in line to be presented to the audience is a woman driving a car. We see a close up of her hand grasping the steering wheel and a cigarette, suggesting that is very stressed. The entire scene becomes quite hectic all of a sudden in comparison to the calmer drug filled previous one, the non-diegetic music picking up quickly as the violins play a more feminine and busy tune. The woman is bickering into the phone as if her patience has run out. She speaks of almost arriving in the hospital and the fact that she is 'not smoking' even though she clearly is. This emphasizes how stressed she must be if she is not a regular smoker, and the fact that she may be worried about a loved one in the hospital. There are several close ups of her face, and it is clear that she is tired as the audience is subjected to the lines in her face and the messy state of her hair. During this scene there is a huge blur outside the window as she drives faster and faster to reach the hospital. This emphasizes the hectic mood of the sense even more.

The last person to whom the audience is introduced to is a man in hospital. There is an establishing shot allowing us to see the scarce, clincal hospital room as he sits in a wheel chair looking out of the window. There is a blueish colour wash, illustrating the hospital as cold and intimidating, and perhaps reflecting the mood in which the middle aged man is. The fact that he is in hospital leads the audience to think that he may be the reason why the woman is rushing there. We are then subjected to a close up of his face which is miserable, the expression in his eyes dead. There are bandages around his wrists implying that he may have tried to kill himself, therefore landing him in a hospital. The scarceness and coldness of the room may be a reflection of him having lost everything before he decided to commit suicide.

The editing in this film, although subtle, is very effective. The fact that the audience is introduced to each character seperately, suggests that although they all seem to be connected they are not at all a close family or group of people. The quick cuts in between scenes allows the most important points of the person to be viewed, still keeping the time in which they are shown reasonable. Yet these short cuts, in combination with the obvious seperation between these people, causes the audience to be curious, interested in each of these characters and how they are connected.

Some Inspirational Music- Katharina & Zoe

These are a selection of songs that we would use as non-diegetic sound. I think this could set the mood quite well for the opening of our movie, as it's calm, allowing the pensive, thoughtful reflection of the protagonist, whilst keeping a dark essence.

The notebook title sequence-Katharina

This is the title sequence of the movie "The notebook".
The story is based on the novel of Nicholas Sparks. Basically I recored the titles when they appear in the first minutes of the movie.

The 'Pearl and Dean'- Katharina, Kim & Zoe

The Pearl and Dean website basically sells the slots of time used by advertisers before a movie starts in the cinema. Judging by the genre of the movie and the audience that views it they select certain types of adverts that would appeal and apply to the people viewing it.
A good example of this would be an action movie who's target audience would mainly include teenage boys, therefore advertising specific products that would appeal to them such as sports trainers, cologne and video games.

Judging from the genre of our movie, and the audience it would most likely attract, we think most of the advertisements shown would be appealing to quirky teenage and young adult girls. Alternative clothes brands would be shown such as Urban Outfitters and perfume and jewelry could also appear. There would also be several advertisements for media products such as iPods, iPhones, computers and 3D TVs.

Moodboard- Katharina, Kim & Zoe

Creating a moodboard to depict the type of things we would like to include in our movie, we cut out several images from magazines which we thought would represent our style well.
A lot of quirky colours were used, ranging from dark to bright to illustrate the mood of the protagonist as she explains the situation in which she is placed.
We used images of young alternative teenagers that shared some sort of relationship to depict the leading role and her deceased friend. Combined with the words 'Days Of Heaven' we thought this was a great representation of how the happy times the friends used to share have passed. The use of the word heaven also adds irony and intrigue to the piece.

Audience Research- Zoe

After figuring out what attracts and what puts people of movies, I've come up with a few elements that should be used and avoided when attempting to create the opening of a movie.

Most people are attracted to very striking openings that immediately catch their eye and keep their attention throughout the movie. This could be a tragic accident or an exciting even that is taking place, as it makes the audience yearn to realize what's going on and what is going to happen later on judging from the consequences of the current scene.

Unusual protagonists are always a good point to start off with, similarly to the striking opening, as it catches peoples' eye. The use of an original and peculiar leading role captures the audience attention, because it places them in the place of the protagonist which may be unfamiliar territory, therefore causing them to want to figure out this person.

People are put off by the stereotypical storyline that occurs so often in films these days. A good example of this would be the movie 'An Ugly Truth', which depicts a hardworking girl who meets the type of man she despises, but eventually falls in love with him through a series of unlikely events, providing the movie with a 'happily ever after' ending.

People appreciate movies that do not necessarily make them think, but provide a different view on the world, providing them with a fresh take on things. A good yet extreme example of this kind of movie would be"The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" as it places people in a completely unnatural and strange context. Although this might be considered as quite bizarre, it is also very interesting as it almost creates a whole new universe for the audience.

Which one captures your attention more?

The Perfect Audience Member- Zoe

Having used the website http://www.uktribes.com and a bit of my own intuition I pieced together what I would expect to be the perfect audience member for our movie. According to the website the ideal person to watch, understand and enjoy this particular type of film would vary between the equally alternative "Hipster" and "Indie Scenster". These categories are meant to represent teenagers that are always on the cutting edge of everything, whether is be style of music, books or movies. They are very original and not afraid to "think outside the box". This combined with their natural intuition of what is hot and not, proves to be a very effective quality when it comes to trend setting involving mainly fashion and music.

I would expect the ideal audience for this movie to be mainly females, as the protagonist is a young teenage girl. However, it could appeal to a range of people as everyone has been placed in a hard situation, therefore allowing people to relate to the main role.

Judging for the assumption of UkTribes I would expect this person to have a very liberal and original take on fashion, as they would never be afraid to experiment with clothes to develop their own trends and styles. They could wear anything ranging from nerd glasses, to floral patterned skirts.

They would be equally as liberal on music, appreciating small indie bands such as The XX and Rad Pitt, whilst also enjoying the classic greats like Nirvana and Led Zep.

Just like music, they would enjoy the classic literature and melodrama of Charlotte Brontë and Oscar Wilde, as well as the kooky and original storylines of Nick Hornby.

Yet again, just like their music and literature taste, they would appreciate the classic greatness of films such as Casablanca to Breakfast at Tiffanys, yet they would also admire the newer and 'daring' films such as The Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and Juno.

Hobbies would obviously include indulging in all their preferences, as they would listen to music, read, and get three steps ahead of the latest trends. However, they would also have a great sense of fun and would spend weekends chilling with mates and clubbing at night.

Tastes in food could range drastically from the very sophisticated choice of wine, salami and baguette to the very simple and greasy Fish N Chips, pizza and kebab.

Ideally they would be very liberal and open to anything new and appreciate the 'art' that comes across, no matter how strange or daring it may appear to be.

Independent film research- Katharina

The Independent film

Basically the independent film, also called “Indie film”, was a film which was produced outside of the American film studios, without any financial support . At the beginning only the American film producer were producing this kind of films, later also other countries were using this type of films.

In 1980 when the term “Independing films” arise, young film producers ,who get bored and were having brilliant creativity ideas ,were trying to produce their own little movies, first they had to find financial support for their films ,which stories are different from the typical film stories.

From their conception, independent films aren’t just made outside of the studio system. They are made in opposition to the studio system, with its relentless need to round off the corners and soften the blows.

Here are two examples for an Independent film:

Saw 4  and Wolf creek

Independent film research- Kim

What is independent film? Is it unrestrained, Pegasus out of personal film-making space? I think the answer is half .It's because independent film is not operating in a vacuum, it connect with many other institutional like economic, technological or political and also the Organizations, industry and ideologies may affect the film's theme and style.

The origin of independent film are after the second world war. Camera which are more portable and the decision of Paramount, extract a group of experimental and avant-garde film specifically shot artist's appear, films are exploiting and independent film starting become popular.

What are the benefits of independent film? The biggest advantage i can think about is they are inexpensive, you can produce a independent film with any mainstream film company's sponsor. Also independent film business isn't subject to the constraints of factors, and the subject can be very broad and rich. You can start from personal experience to the social, gender and religious concerns. So it gave us more space to show our creative and ideas without such a big expenditure.

Film Pitch To Mrs. Black- Katharina, Kim & Zoe

An Independent movie, revolving around the young female protagnosist, Sophie. She tries to come to terms with the death of her best friend, Stan. Waking up and getting ready for the day ahead, she reflects the times they had together. Sophie never speaks during this time, as her narrating voice explains the situation in which she has been placed, and the memories that she had shared with Stan as the scene switches from her to the flashbacks that she is having

This idea includes a young protagonist who's life has been turned upside down. offering a completely different view and insight on the life of a teenager. This unusual context in which the protagonist has been placed creates an original and fresh take, therefore ideally fitting into the genre of an independent movie.

Independent Film Research- Zoe

The term Idependent or Indie refers to a film that is mostly produced outside of a major film studio. In order for it to be considered as independent, less than half the films financing must come from a major studio, as the movie should not be dependent on large labels, hence the name of the genre.

The genre Indepent Film also refers to art films in which the producers’ personal artictic views are realized. Therefore the content might differ drastically from most mass marketed movies.

The roots of the genre started developing in the early 1900s, where the fimmakers began to resist the control of a trust called the Motion Picture Patents Company or “Edison Trust”.

During this time Thomas Edison owned most of the major patents relating to the motion pictures as well as that for raw film. The MPPC enforced it’s patents and constantly received injunctions against independent film makers. Due to these threats, independent filmmakers began building their own cameras and moving to Hollywood, California. This distance from the home of Edison in New Jersey made it more difficult for the MPPC to enforce authority on the independent filmmakers.

To fit into the genre of an independent movie, we will have to include an unusual protagonist, such as a young troubled teenager. The context in which the story is illustrated should be original, perhaps a narration with a series of flashbacks. Finally, we will need to come up with an interesting and original film plot, offering a different view and take on life and the situations in which people are placed.

Some Examples of Indie Films are:

The Passion of the Christ

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

Lost in Translation

Reservoir Dogs

Jelly Babies Task Thriller 2- Katharina, Kim & Zoe

Two friends begin to argue.
One of them pushes the other down a hill, killing her.
The one who died, comes back as a ghost.
The ghost goes into her friends body.

And makes her body jump into the sea to take revenge.

Comments:
We tried making a PG ghost films, but we found it a bit hard coming up with a convincing ghost story thats appropriate for kids. I think we had the right idea with the ghosts, but it isn't a total success on the PG rating.

Jelly Babies Task Thriller 1- Katharina, Kim & Zoe

 Twin Girls.
 Fancy the same boy.
One twin sees the other kissing the boy they fancy.
In rage she murders her twin.
And pretends to be her sister to be with the boy she fancies.

Comments:
This task was at first quite challenging, as coming up  with an original and convincing story line took a lot of thought. Yet once this was done everything fell into place quickly as we arranged the jelly babies to our liking and recorded the images to depict the story.
